Herbert Woods Biography

Gospel music has the unique ability to elevate the listener, transporting them from their circumstances into the divine presence of God. This transformative power defines the music ministry of Herbert D. Woods, an Alabama-born singer, songwriter, and musician widely recognized by his stage name, Holy Boy. With a modern, urban take on gospel, Herbert’s soulful delivery of contemporary psalms inspires both spirited praise and heartfelt worship.

In 2009, Herbert released his debut album, Out of Time, under Next Era Music/Universal Music Christian Group Gospel. The project introduced listeners to his warm, soulful tenor voice, blending Southern gospel roots with modern sensibilities.
At first glance, Herbert’s polished image and dynamic, soul-infused music may evoke the vibe of a major metropolitan artist.

However, his foundation was laid in the heart of Mobile, Alabama, where he developed his vocal talent and earned the nickname “The Boy Wonder,” later evolving into the moniker “Holy Boy.”

Herbert’s journey into music began with unexpected inspiration. “The first song I learned on the keyboard was Stevie Wonder’s Ribbon in the Sky,” he recalls. Initially, he aspired to be a drummer, but mimicking Stevie Wonder’s vocals ignited his passion for singing, earning him admiration and a name that stuck. Growing up in a family devoted to ministry—his grandmother was a pastor, and his mother served as the church administrator—Herbert’s musical talents naturally found a purpose in glorifying God. By age 13, he was playing drums and singing with the local choir, The Spirits of Mobile.

Throughout his gospel journey, Mobile embraced Herbert as he evolved musically. He founded a choir (Higher Calling), a quartet (Anointed Sons of Praise), and eventually pursued a solo career through his independent label, Holy Boy Entertainment. However, like many who grew up in the church, Herbert faced a prodigal son moment. In the early 1990s, he spent two years as a member of an R&B group with a promising record deal. After the deal fell through, Herbert spent six months performing in local casinos. This period of reflection led him back to his spiritual roots. “God had a calling on my life, and I couldn’t rest until I realigned myself with His purpose,” Herbert reflects.

Herbert’s love for music transcends genres, with influences ranging from Stevie Wonder and Luther Vandross to Usher. These inspirations bring an R&B flair to his gospel sound. Simultaneously, gospel greats like John P. Kee, Kirk Franklin, and The Clark Sisters fuel his ability to honor the message of Christ while showcasing the breadth of modern gospel.

Herbert’s latest project, Ghetto Gospel: Taking It to the Streets, marks a powerful return. The new single, In His Will, is a spirited, mid-tempo anthem with heartfelt ad-libs and soaring vocals. Featuring lyrics like, “If you want me to stay, I’ll be around today to be available for you to use me,” the song’s infectious groove and resonant chorus—“Stay in His will”—draw listeners into its uplifting message.

Songs like Hold On and Church Tonight from his debut album earned Herbert recognition, including a feature on Gospel of Music with Jeff Majors in 2010. His return to using his given name in the industry marks a new chapter in his career. “I want people to know me for who I truly am,” Herbert explains. “The name Holy Boy was fun for promoting myself back then, but this is a new era. As we grow and pursue God’s vision for us, redefining who we are can be part of that journey.”

It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop
